Which codec is making my thumbnails?

Postby gauu on Thu Oct 29, 2009 5:25 am

Just wondering which codec (or what) is making my explorer thumbnail views in Windows Vista, I have 2 PCs and one makes thumbnails for FLV MOV MP4 files and they are smooth and not from the first frame so i don't get lots of black thumbs, so I wan't my other computer to have them like that, I tried with codec packs but the thumbs they make look too pixeled and they are all from the first frame, so I was wondering what is making them so I can install on my other PC. I can upload the InstalledCodec HTML inform file if someone wants to help me.

Thanks.

The thumbnails are generated by a shell extension from Microsoft. That shell extension uses the same DirectShow filters as that get used during normal playback.

Showing the first frame is totally normal. The shell extension will do that for all formats that Windows does not natively support. None of the formats you mentioned above are natively supported by Vista.

@gauu: If the other pc have Win XP you can generate thumbnails with Haali shell extension that works better.

Thanks for your answers if no one else has any comment I guess I'll have to install a codec pack, @ale5000n I use Windows Vista on both PCs, I installed "Haali Shell Extension" but it didn't worked.
