Un-sync'd .mkv playback in Vista x64 MCE

Postby massimo on Mon Feb 04, 2008 8:46 pm

Hi,
I have the 64 bit of Vista and using the 64 bit codec pack allows me to watch .mkv files in Media Center. :) However, the sound and the mage is not in sync all the time :( I have noticed that enabling the OSD function in FFDshow gives a lot better performance when playing videos, don't ask me why. But I'm still having problems with un-sync'd audio/video! Am I missing some settings in FFDshow, and why is not the Matroska Splitter icon in the system tray when playing .mkv?

Since I only have the 64 bit codec installed, I cannot watch the videos in any 32 bit media player. So, I installed the 32 bit coedec pack on top of the 64 bit codec pack, and it enables me to watch .mkv files in any 32 bit player without any sync problems :) However, .mkv files in MCE will not play anymore. If I uninstall the 32 bit codec pack, .mkv files play in MCE again.

Conclusions / Questions:
1. the 32 bit and the 64 bit codec packs cannot be installed at the same time! Or am I doing wrong? I choose the default installation for the 32 bit.
2. sync problems when playing .mkv files in MCE. Is the Haali Splitter optimized for 64 bit? Have'nt seen a stand alone Haali splitter for x64.
3. OSD function in FFDshow give me better performance when playing .mkv files. Why? Bug?
4. How can I tell the Matroska Splitter is working in x64 mode? Only FFDshow show in the system tray. When using 32bit players the matroska icon always show in the system tray. Can I gain better performance tweaking FFDshow for .mkv files?

Primary I want it to work in MCE (x64) but of course I want the 32 bit players to work also.

I don't have 64-bit Windows myself, so I can not reproduce your problems.

There is no 64-bit version of Haali Media Splitter. The 64-bit pack uses 64-bit versions of the splitters made by Gabest.

Do you have an nvidia graphics card? The sync problems may be solvable with a new driver. Have a look at this topic:

I don't know why installing the 32-bit pack breaks .mkv playback in MCE. What happens if you install the 64-bit pack again after the 32-bit pack?

OK,
got the 32bit and 64bit codecs to work together!!! My bad.

Still having problems with unsync'd audio/video though. I'm using ATI HD2400 video card so the Nvidia link will not help me. However, the card should be able to decode H.264 and VC-1. Will try to update my video card drivers and read in the ffdshow-tryout forum to see if I can find some information there. Thanks

Your card will only be able to use hardware acceleration for decoding H.264/VC1 in combination with special decoding filters. Currently only commercial filters such as included in PowerDVD have that capability. But I don't think there are 64-bit versions of that yet.

The 64-bit version of ffdshow has much lower performance than the 32-bit version (due to compiler availability issues). So a very fast CPU is needed in order to smoothly play high resolution H.264 video.
