"QuickTime failed to initialize. Error # 0..."

Postby ant on Thu Oct 15, 2009 4:26 am

Hello.

Ever since I upgraded my old QT Lite v2.9.2 (with the latest K-Lite Codec Full Pack + many updates) to v3.0.0, I am getting this error with embedded QuickTime MOV on various Web pages (e.g., http://www.specialproblems.com/wolfmother.htm ). The error said "QuickTime failed to initialize. Error # 0.
Please make sure QuickTime is properly installed on this computer." Then, another error that said "Illegal operation in Plug-in -- The plug-in performed an illegal operation. You are strongly advised to restart SeaMonkey."

SeaMonkey's about:plugins shows:
QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.4

File name: npqtplugin.dll
The QuickTime Plugin allows you to view a wide variety of multimedia content in Web pages. For more information, visit the QuickTime Web site.

MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
application/sdp SDP stream descriptor sdp Yes
application/x-sdp SDP stream descriptor sdp Yes
application/x-rtsp RTSP stream descriptor rtsp, rts Yes
video/quicktime QuickTime Movie mov,qt,mqv Yes
audio/x-wav WAVE audio wav,bwf Yes
audio/wav WAVE audio wav,bwf Yes
audio/aiff AIFF audio aiff,aif,aifc,cdda Yes

This only happens in Mozilla's SeaMonkey v1.1.18's Web browser. Updated Windows XP Pro. SP3's Internet Explorer v6.0 SP3 and Firefox v2.0.0.20 worked fine.

Changelog 2.9.2 to 3.0.0 ~ 2009-10-09
* Updated QuickTime framework to version 7.64.17.73

I assume something from that broke it. :(

Any ideas? Thank you in advance. :)

Same problem, but this time it crashes SeaMonkey v1.1.18:

AppName: seamonkey.exe AppVer: 1.8.20090.16977 ModName: gkplugin.dll
ModVer: 1.8.20090.16977 Offset: 00014198

I am going to retry this at work with my old office XP machine with the same QT Lite version (no K-Lite Codec Pack though, but does have RealAlternative) and Web browser.

Could you check if the plugin files in "C:\Program Files\QT Lite\Plugins" are the same as the ones in the Seamonkey plugin folder? Perhaps Seamonkey somehow has old copies of them.

Reproduced it easily on my old office's updated XP Pro. SP2 machine (IE6). Here's the listings from it:

Looks correct to me. Did you try it with Mozilla's SeaMonkey v1.1.18 (not v2 RC)?

I haven't got Seamonkey installed at this moment.

Did you change the QuickTime browser plugin settings? Because normally there are more plugin files. The plugin files are recreated when you edit the settings. Also the file DeleteMe1.exe is something I have never seen before, but that may be a left over file from after you changed the settings.

Yes, I changed the default QTsettings via control panel. Is that a nono? I noticed installing/upgrading didn't ask me to configure QT. Is that why? I don't like how QT was doing MIME anmd file associations, cache settings, autoplay, etc.

Remember, it worked fine in Firefox v2 and IE6.

I should check my home PC to see any differences between SM's and QTL's plugin files.

Changing the settings should normally not be a problem. I don't know why it doesn't work with Seamonkey. I will test it later if I have some time.

OK. Do you still want me to compare the file listings for you?

I might need to downgrade back to v2.9.2 if we can't figure it out. :(

I suggest to uninstall "QT Lite", then manually delete the folder "D:\winstuff\QTlite" and then delete all npqtplugin files in the folder "C:\winstuff\SeaMonkey\plugins".
Then reinstall "QT Lite".

I reproduced it on my third XP Pro. SP2 machine that I use for testing. It was a clean image too since I had to install SeaMonkey v1.1.18 (no extensions and using defaults) and QT Alternative (not Lite and using defaults (did not configure it) this time) v3.0.0. Then, SeaMonkey crashed due to quicktimewebhelper.qtx v7.6.4.0.

It is definitely something incompatible with these two softwares. :(

FYI, QTA doesn't detect installed SeaMonkey v2.0 RC1 which should be fixed for the next release. I had to manually copy the QT files to SM2's plugins directory/folder. I tested it and it had no crashes. Looks like it only crashes in v1.1.18 (and maybe others in v1.x).

OK, I downgraded back to v2.9.2 (QuickTime Plug-in v7.6.2 instead of v7.6.4) works fine) due to v3.0.0's incompatibilty with SeaMonkey v1.1.18. I hope there will be a fix for v3. :)

Fixing detection of Seamonkey 2.0 should be no problem. Will be done for next version (when QT gets updated).

The problem with SeaMonkey 1.1.18 is not fixable at this moment. I suspect it is a bug in SeaMonkey.

Didn't you code the changes (frameworks) between v2.9.2 and v3.0.0? If not, then where did they come from? Apple? I wonder if Apple's QT stuff crashes too.

Unfortunately, I am at home so I can't try the latest QT to see if it crashes. I don't want to mess with my home PCs.
