Codec Guide

I virus scanned it, and installed it, but none of the .MOV file extensions become associated with anything.

So, I went into its configuration. All of the file associates were not selected. Fine, I didn't want them all associated with QuickTime anyway. So, I selected just .MOV, and clicked apply. But, this does nothing.

What's wrong with the software?

P.S. I already had QuickTime (the real thing) installed, but has uninstalled it before installing QuickTime Alternative. I didn't have a prior version of QT Alternative installed. I even tried loading the .MOV files into Windows Media Player, in case the codecs were installed, and it doesn't recognize the files, even if I force it to try and play them.

Please help.

Ok, wait, this page ( http://codecguide.com/about_qt.htm ) says:

"If you want to play QuickTime files in Windows Media Player or another DirectShow based player, then it is recommended to install the K-Lite Codec Pack."

This implies that it wasn't supposed to work with Windows Media Player. Regardless, it still does not act like QuickTime, since QuickTime makes MOV files associated with some application that actually plays them, and QuickTime Alternative does not. I don't understand why the installer didn't associate the files with a movie player that can play QuickTime files. Isn't that the purpose of installing QuickTime Alternative?

I must be missing something.

Ok, I am installing K-Lite Codec Pack, and it defaults to loading Media Player Classic. I am not sure why. But, I'd rather it just load the Windows Media Player that I am actually used to. So I go to click on this radio box for Windows Media Player, and instead of selecting it, it scrolls down, and selects the check box beneath it. ....wow. So, what did I just change? The reason this happens is because the click acts like a scroll and THEN a click, instead of a click on the thing I actually clicked on. You'd think that clicking on something would act like a click on it, and not scroll the window and click on the thing beneath it. Someone may want to fix this.

That is an irritating feature of the Windoze UI that has been there since day one. Just as you click on something, the line scrolls up and you actually click on something else.

I was attracted to this thread because it said QTA doesn't work, which it doesn't, for me. I installed K-Lite codec pack and I can play MOV files, etc, in Media Player Classic, no problem there, but I can't play any streaming links in Opera. I n-Lited my Server 2003 and removed IE, Windows Media Player, Outlook Express, etc. I love it, it's so fast and never any trouble. Except to play MOV embedded in web page.

I absolutely refuse to install the Quicktime garbage. So I got QTLite, which is Quicktime without all the garbage, and installed that. It didn't put the plugin into the Opera Plugins directory, so I put it there myself. Didn't make any difference. I still can't play a MOV in a web page. I shouldn't expect there to be any difference, I suppose, bcuz K-Lite has QTAlternative already built in. It just doesn't work. Anybody know why? Googling hasn't got me very far. That's how I got here.

BTW, Jason, why don't you just use the MPC instead of WMP? It plays everything and works the way WMP should have all along. And it doesn't phone home.

Which version of Opera are you using? QT Lite has worked fine for me with both Opera 9.27 and 9.51

If it didn't automatically install the browser plugin, then that means it was unable to detect the location of the plugin directory. It uses some information in the Registry to find that.

If you type "about:plugins" in the address bar of Opera, it will show you which plugins are installed.

There is a 'trick' to let QT handle the plugin installation. Simply go the QT control panel, browser tab, MIME settings. Change something and press OK. Then QT will re-install the browser plugins.
