Legality of QuickTime/Real Alternative / K-lite

Postby [deXter] on Sun Jun 15, 2008 11:25 am

I've seen some sites like this disallowing the posting of links to QT/Real Alternative or k-lite codec packs. I've also noticed that the Vista Codec Package guys removed the QuickTime codecs for this reason.

On the other hand, legal sites like Download.com and BetaNews still link to and post updates for these codec packs.

So I'm a bit confused, is there any legal issue whatsoever? If so, how come Download.com and BetaNews and plenty other downloading networks still host it? Or are Neowin and others erring on the side of caution here?

They exist for several years now, and are based on freely available software. As long as Apple/RealNetworks don't complain, they will most likely continue to exist. Many different packs exist that use components from QT and Real.

So is it legal or not?

I just downloaded QuickTime and read the EULA. It states:

Except as and only to the extent expressly permitted in this License or by applicable law, you may not copy, decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble, modify, or create derivative works of the Apple Software or any part thereof.

Don't you think QT Alternative/Lite is in violation?

EULAs are totally meaningless in many countries and have no legal binding whatsoever.

What I think doesn't matter. And what you think doesn't really interest me.
