MKV thumbnails under Win7 x64

Postby Karlson2k on Sat Oct 24, 2009 11:06 am

Out of box win 7 generate thumbnails for avi, mp4, wmv.
After installation of K-Lite x64 and K-Lite Mega (with option "generate thumbnails") nothing was changed. MKV still don't have any thumbnail.
BTW explorer show a lot of details for avi, mp4 (resolution, rating, fps, description and more) and nothing for MKV. Is any too tools available for extend this functionality for MKV?

AVI and MP4 are formats that are natively supported by Windows. That is why more information is show for them.

For MKV thumbnails it may be needed to set ffdshow as the preferred H.264 decoder (64-bit) using the Win7DSFilterTweaker tool.

It's clear, but I was asking for any available additional explorer extension.

Didn't help!
Set both 32-bit and 64-bit to FFDShow, but nothing happens. :)

There is no extension for it.

A reboot might be needed. Also clear the thumbnail cache (with the Windows File Cleanup tool).

Reboot was needed.
Not necessary to clear cache.

But thumbnails a little bit useless because it's always the first frame of movie which one in most cases is completely black. :) So I've got a lot of black squares. :)

And why installer have a lot of options in "Generate thumbnails for: ...."? Does it change anything under Win7 x64?

Is it possible to have thumbnails for MKV generated the same way as for AVI, MP4, WMV so thumbnail show some picture (not the first frame)?

Haali shell extension has any effect under Win7? Should it be used under Win7 or be removed?

That is not possible. The Microsoft shell extension simply works this way for formats that it does not support natively.

Haali shell extension is not compatible with Windows 7.

Are you going to hide "Haali shell extension" in installer for Win7?

Next version of Haali Media Splitter will have full Windows 7 and 64-bit compatibility. However, they are going to remove the shell extension (or at least its thumbnail functionality) because it causes too many problems that they can't fix and don't want to fix.

It is already hidden on Vista and above.

Is option "Make thumbnail generation possible for the following file types" related to Haali or not?

If Haali shell is installed on 2000/XP then it will get used for thumbnail extraction of some of the file extensions. For the other extensions the Microsoft shell extension is used.

On Vista/7, the Microsoft shell extension is always used.
