K-Lite 5.3.0 Subtitles

Postby Nihon on Thu Nov 05, 2009 12:12 am

Whenever I play a .mkv video file. The subtitles are at the bottom of the video like usual but if I switch to full screen the subtitles go below the black bars (black bars because its widescreen). I do not know how to change this so they appear at the bottom of the video that is playing instead of the bottom of the player. I am running Windows 7 64 bit version.

Media Player Classic options -> Subtitles -> Default Style -> change "Position subtitles relative to the video frame"

@clsid: I want to show subtitles in the black bar, I set "override placement" and vertical => 105%, then the subtitle is showed in the correct position but it lost subtitle colors; if I close and reopen the player it completely ignore "override placement".
I use MPC-HC 1.3.1330.0

Be aware that with a vertical placement of 105%, some subs may (partially) fall out of the visible frame.

I might have an idea why your settings get lost. Does it work if you delete this registry value?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Gabest\Media Player Classic\Settings, value: SPDefaultStyle

If it does, then it is an incompatibility with the settings from the old MPC. That is something I can fix in MPC-HC.

The setting isn't lost (if I go in the settings page it is showed correctly) it is just ignored during playback.

The settings only get used for plain text subtitles. Some subtitle formats, like SSA and ASS, have their own styling defined in the subtitle file. Perhaps that is the problem?

For some reason when I override the placement the subtitles get much smaller from their original size.

Use that instead of override placement.

"Position subtitles relative to the video frame" have three states.
2 are clear but what mean the other?

@clsid: Can you please add a option in the setup to configure this setting?

Unchecked: position relative to the player window
Intermediate state (square): position relative to the player window
Checked: position relative to video frame

There is a subtle difference between unchecked and intermediate, but I can't remember exactly what it was right now.

Sorry, but not every single option can be added to the installer. Too many options will make it too complex and confusing for people. And in this specific case, I think that the majority of people prefers the default setting. If you can give a good argument why you prefer it differently, then maybe it can be reconsidered.

When the player is fullscreen I think is better to show subtitle in the black line at the bottom of the screen (so it doesn't cover the video) instead of show at the bottom of the video.

The default behaviour is this in KLCP 5.4.0:

If the black bar is thicker then the subs will be on top of it. By default they are displayed on approximately 90% of the height of the window. If you want them lower (like in your screenshot), then you need to customize the settings. But be careful not to place them too low, because the subs sometimes have two lines of text.

The subs are as in my first screenshot only by unchecking "Position subtitles relative to the video frame".
"Override placement" is still disabled.
