Distorted Video in 5.3.0

Postby kt5nc1 on Thu Oct 29, 2009 10:40 pm

Hi, after installing 5.3.0 most of the files I try to play flash green/black and pink blocks over the whole video, it's completely unwatchable... I'm using windows vista, but have also tried it on windows 7. All of the video files are MPEG4 H264 MKV, but there are some that play fine . It didn't do this with 5.2.0 :(

This is caused by a bug in your graphics driver.

You can avoid the problem by disabling the internal DXVA H.264 decoder in Media Player Classic.

I disabled the DXVA decoder and it plays fine now, but now I have a few more questions... first my video card is not the one doing the decoding now, right? Second, this is a bug with the official catalyst drivers probably millions of people are using but I am the only person that has posted here about it? and lastly, I don't know why it worked fine with DXVA enabled in 5.2.0, but is it likely that this will be fixed in the future seeing as how it was broken with an update? Thanks!

If DXVA is enabled, then the video card is doing part of the decoding.

You are not the only one with this problem. It does not happen to everyone. It can depend on an exact combination of video card, driver version, windows version, application settings, etc.

5.2.0 contained an older version of Media Player Classic, that is the difference. However, the currently included version is supposed to have much better DXVA compatibility. There are less people having problems with this version. I guess you are just unlucky.

I wish I could have a better answer for you, but DXVA simply has its annoyances :(

I had some DXVA issue myself some time ago. Fixed them by installing the 9.9 driver. I needed to use MobilityModder to be able to install the driver properly.

Which ATi card do you have?

As "computer repair technician" I can say that the ATI driver is a annoyance itself, the nvidia driver is much better.

Problem: black video
Windows 7
GF9800GT
forceware 191.07-195.39

5.2.0 work good
5.3.0 not work
5.3.0 with Media Player Classic HC 1.2.1008.0 work good

if i go Codec Tweak Tool -> manage preferred source filters -> set Gabest as the preferred M2TS source filter ------ Media Player Classic HC 1.2.1008.0 have not work too.

This is fixed in 5.4.0. The files that played fine before with DXVA enabled still play fine, and the ones that didn't now automatically start with DXVA disabled, so I assume the problem was with the files themselves.. Thanks!

Those files probably have more reference frames than are supported by DXVA. MediaInfo should be able to show you the details about how the file was encoded.
